چکیده

Because of the contamination of jets, using the size – continuum luminosity relation can overestimate the broad line region (BLR) size and black hole mass for radio-loud AGNs. We propose a new relation between the BLR size and Hβ emission line luminosity and present evidences for using it to get more accurate black hole masses of radio-loud AGNs. For extreme radio-loud AGNs such as blazars with weak/absent emission lines, we suggest to use the fundamental plane relation of their elliptical host galaxies to estimate the central velocity dispersions and black hole masses, if their host galaxies can be mapped.

Accretion rates and accretion efficiency in AGNs

We used the standard geometrical thin accretion theory to obtain the accretion rates in Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars. Combining accretion rates with the bolometric luminosity, we obtained the accretion efficiency. We found most of Seyfert 1 galaxies and radio quiet quasars have lower accretion efficiencies while most of the radio loud quasars possess higher accretion efficiencies. This findin...

The most massive black holes lie in the most massive elliptical galaxies, and at low-z all radio-loud AGNs lie in giant ellipticals. This strongly suggests a link between radio-loudness and black hole mass. We argue that the increase in the radio-loud fraction with AGN luminosity in optically-selected quasar samples is consistent with this picture. We also use the ratio of black holes today to ...

− σ ∗ relation for normal galaxies ?

In order to examine the relationship between the black hole mass MBH and stellar velocity dispersion σ∗ in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we study two effects which may cause the uncertainty of black hole mass estimates for radio-loud AGNs: the relativistic beaming effect on the observed optical continuum radiation and the orientation effect on broad emission line width. After correc...

Black hole mass estimation with a relation between the BLR size and emission line luminosity of AGN

An empirical relation between the broad line region (BLR) size and optical continuum luminosity is often adopted to estimate the BLR size and then the black hole mass of AGNs. However, optical luminosity may not be a good indicator of photoionizing luminosity for extremely radio-loud AGNs because the jets usually contribute significantly to the optical continuum. Therefore, the black hole masse...

Estimate black hole masses of AGNs using ultraviolet emission line properties

Based on the measured sizes of broad line region of the reverberation-mapping AGN sample, two new empirical relations are introduced to estimate the central black hole masses of radio-loud high-redshift (z > 0.5) AGNs. First, using the archival IUE/HST spectroscopy data at UV band for the reverberation-mapping objects, we obtained two new empirical relations between the BLR size and Mgii /Civ e...
